Over the past several months as I have begun to publish and write more here on theproductpoet.com, in the month of May I reached a new milestone for myself as a writer slash blogger slash poet. To some, this might not seem like a huge milestone, but for me it was something I have worked on for the past three months.

In the world of blogging, many bloggers focus on Internet traffic, such as unique visitors, page views, bounce rates and website rankings. Some bloggers focus on Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, to better drive traffic to one’s website and conversely piqué advertisers curiosity. For me, over the past three months I’ve been making sure I have the right tags, the right metadata, optimized titles and for that I use the Yoast SEO plugin.

As I am a data geek, I wanted to better understand where and how people come to my website, I look at three different analytic solutions: Alexa, Google Analytics and JetPack Statistics. While I can’t tell you which is more accurate, as all three results are very different, the most interesting statistic I use to measure my effectiveness isn’t really a statistic at all.

The most important measurement of effectiveness is the following chart from Google Analytics:

What the above chart depicts is a 24-hour, seven-day calendar and for the first time I had someone or something visit my website at least once every hour, for every day of the week. I’m not sure why I found this so cool, but as a blogger slash writer slash poet, it means that I truly have a global presence or at least some U.S. insomniacs.

And for me, many of the results of my different analytics are truly fascinating and over the past three to four months I’ve accomplished this very important goal that I set out for myself as a writer. You see, when many bloggers start a blog they don’t really set goals for themselves such as publishing daily, creating entertaining content that brings their readers back for more. I have tried to make sure that I publish something each day, whether it is a short haiku, a review or just a random musing such as this post.

As a result, out of about 940 million active global websites, my website is now in the top 0.13% of all active global websites according to Alexa and is about the 138,000 most active website in the United States. I’m not sure about you, but I find that fact kind of cool.

Furthermore, there are a lot of great tricks and trips I have stumbled across along the way and trust me, there has been a fair amount of experimentation over the past three or so months. For example, reviews seem to drive more traffic depending on the interaction I have with the reviewee. I always try to drop my link of my review on to the reviewee’s Facebook page should they have one. I always make sure I tweet the article to them and most importantly I only write positive reviews. If I have a bad experience, I don’t write about it. Don’t tweet about it. Don’t Facebook about it. I just love to say I never complain, but if I do, it will always be, in rhyme or haiku.
